First off, I love volvo. I have a 1998 v70 t5, a 1995 850 turbo, a 1996 850 turbo, and a 1997 s90. I recently had a head gasket failure on my wife's 1996 850. The car in question has 267,000+ miles on it. I had just rebuilt the automatic transmission. The aw5042le. It lost reverse. I tore down the engine, and it needs bearings, rings, head straightened, valve job. Normal stuff. I also have the 1998 v70 t5 out and torn apart. I started looking for bearings for these engines. I ordered from rockautoparts. They called me, 2 days later, and told me the bearings are no longer available. The main bearings. Glyco brand, which I believe are the same as factory bearings. Rod bearings available. I did find the kings bearings does have the mains available. This is where it gets interesting. I also bought a haynes repair manual. I contacted my local volvo dealer. They told me the main bearings are available, but you buy them separate, and they have three different sizes from the factory. He stated that they are color coded, and the back of the bearings should be marked. I cant find any color codes on the bearing shell. I asked about the thrust bearing if it had a different part# and they didn't know. I did a little research, and the factory turbo bearings are al-6 aluminum, with the upper shell only grooved. For a higher load tolerance than tri-metal bearings? Ok, does anyone have any information, or first hand experience recently on all of this? And a place to order main bearings, other than kings bearings? I also contacted calico coatings. They have coated bearings, but they told me the same thing. Clevite, Mahle, or Glyco do not offer the main bearings.(For either the 1996 850 turbo, or the 1998 v70 t5) These are also modular engines, so I find it hard to believe that someone doesn't still manufacture these mains, other than kings. I have more questions, but I don't want to overwhelm one post. Help please! Thank You in advance!
